Functional Safety
HSEC's Functional Safety Advisory Service provides specialist advice for companies who are involved with the
design, manufacture, operation and maintenance of Safety Related Systems.
The services offered have been designed using the guiding principles of BS EN
61508, other related standards and the recently published HSE guidance ‘Managing
competence for Safety Related Systems’.
HSEC’s Functional Safety Advisory Service includes the following elements which can be applied
either as a whole or individually:
- Advice on the Hazard and Risk Analysis using qualitative and quantitative means;
- Advice on the assignment of Safety Integrity Levels for Safety Related Systems, and other methods of risk reduction;
- Advice on the development of safety requirements and the allocation of safety functions between different technology Safety Related Systems, with
added focus on the best fit between human and engineered systems;
- Advice on the development of Operation, Maintenance, Safety Validation, Installation and
Commissioning plans;
- Advice on the design of Safety Related Systems in order optimise the system architecture and reliability;
- Advice on design of competency management systems in conformance to HSE guidance, with particular
reference to:
- The implications for hazards and risks if work activities are
not performed correctly,
- The extent to which competence is relied upon in
order to perform work activities correctly,
- Measures to reduce dependence on
competence for work activities,
- Developing competence criteria appropriate to
the organisational context.
Through the multi-disciplinary nature of our business, HSEC have developed a particular understanding of the relationships between
human behaviour and competence, and their effect on the functional safety of
Safety Related Systems. This coupled with a detailed engineering knowledge and
experience base enables us to take the holistic view necessary to provide the
straightforward advice on often complex system wide issues that will help
