Noise at Work Risk Management
Do You Have Problems with Noise?
New Regulations
The E.U. Physical Agents (Noise) Directive is implemented into UK law by ‘The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005’.
The new regulations require a 5dB reduction in the action levels which will mean that many more people will now require protection from the risk of noise induced hearing loss at work.
The regulations take effect from April 2006, other than for the music and entertainment sectors where there is a transition period to 2008.
The major changes are:
- Lower Exposure Action Value (LEAV) of 80dB(A) for a daily dose, and 135dB(C) for impulse noises, replaces First Action Level of 85dB(A)
- Upper Exposure Action Value (UEAV) of 85dB(A) for a daily dose, and 137dB(C) for impulse noises, replaces Second Action Level of 90dB(A) and Peak Action Level of 140dB
- Introduction of the Exposure Limit Value (ELV) of 87dB(A) for a daily dose, and 140dB(C) for impulse noises, after taking account of hearing protection
