SOMAS - The Supply of Machinery Advisory Service
The Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 1992 are the UK regulations which implement the EU Machinery Directive. Machinery supplied before 1st January 1995 which met UK Health and Safety legislation, was exempt from the requirements of the Regulations.
The Supply of Machinery Advisory Service provides assistance to the "person" responsible for ensuring compliance of machinery to meet the requirements of the Regulations. The services provided include:
General Advice on the Regulations and Compliance; covering:
- Scope of the Regulations
- Annex 4 Machines which require special attestation processes
- The application of Harmonised Standards
- Essential Health and Safety Requirements
- Technical Files

Assessment of machinery against the Essential Health and Safety Requirements and appropriate Harmonised Standards
Management of the Nominated Body Assessment Process
Preparation of Technical Files
We normally provide these services by one of the following means:
- Provision of an experienced consultant on a daily rate basis
- Undertaking specified services on a fixed fee basis
- Provision of an experienced consultant to run an in-house seminar for staff who need to be aware of the Regulations
HSEC Ltd also operate the ATEX Advisory Service (ATEXAS) to assist suppliers and users of equipment for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
