Metronet Rail SSL - Structural Survey
Street Management (part of Transport for London) requested that HSEC provide a design review of a new pole to support traffic signals. The design incorporated a wide base to accommodate the signal connection terminals that were originally located near the top of the pole where the signal head attaches.
Since little information was available concerning the structural performance of the current design already in service, HSEC conducted a mechanical analysis of both poles under worst case loading scenarios. A technical report was produced to compare the two designs and highlight any differences in their structural performance considering static strength and deflection of the signals under high wind loading. Improvements and recommendations for the new pole design could then be proposed.
