The baggage handling system between Terminals one and four at Heathrow Airport consists of approximately 470 discrete rail-guided vehicles. The system is integrated into the other baggage handling systems within the respective terminals.
It was noted that there is a perceptible floor vibration at the Terminal four end of the system. The maintenance contractor requested that HSEC Ltd investigate the problem by carrying out whole body vibration (WBV) measurements in the relevant areas, and to compare the results obtained to relevant standards with reference to perception, comfort and any potential adverse health affects. The scope of the investigation did not include any potential adverse effects of vibration on the building’s structure.
Analysis of the measured values allowed HSEC to confirm that accelerations and vibration dose values were well below the levels at which potential adverse health effects would occur.
